Young has 18 digs in 8th straight win

Eryn Young had 18 digs and two aces on Friday night as No. 8 SBCC swept Moorpark 25-13, 25-20, 25-19 in a WSC North women's volleyball match at the Sports Pavilion.

It was the eighth straight win for the Vaqueros (12-4, 3-0) and the 13th straight in conference play for the two-time defending WSC champions.

Katelynn Womack had 10 kills and seven digs. Left-hander Alissa La Rocca added seven kills while Taylor Badois had seven kills and four blocks. Kaitlyn Clemann contributed five kills and middle blocker Paige Sabin added four kills and an .800 hitting percentage.

Madelon Leiphardt, a former Dos Pueblos High standout, had 29 assists and eight digs.

"We played really well," said Leiphardt. "We had some good runs and we've been working on siding out right away so we can get ahead and not worry about stressing out in tight games. I think about the win streak sometimes but I try to focus on the now and just keep it going. I am enjoying all our players and we're really growing as a team."

The Vaqueros broke free from a 6-6 tie in the first set with a 9-4 run capped by a tip block from Womack that made it 15-10. An ace by Tristen Thompson stretched the lead to 20-12. SBCC built a 10-5 lead in the second set and extended it to 19-11 on a kill by Badois.

The Vaqueros outhit the Raiders .245 to minus .018.

"Our passing and serving was our foundation tonight," said coach Ed Gover. "Maddie set a great match by moving it around to both pins and coming back to the middle, she kept them off guard.

"Each match, our hitters are getting better and better. You can't camp on any one of our players. Maddie moves it around so well that it keeps their block guessing."

Moorpark (4-8, 1-1) put together a 4-0 run early in the third set to take a 6-5 lead. The Vaqueros responded with a kill by Clemann and two by Sabin to ignite an 8-3 run that gave them a 13-9 lead. The Raiders cut it to 15-14 before another 8-2 burst extended the margin to 23-16.

"The reason they got the lead in the third set was our hitting errors," said coach Ed Gover. "Those are correctable. Once we settled down, we went kill, kill, kill, kill and we got the lead back. We just needed to be patient and weather the storm a little bit."

The Vaqueros travel to Ventura on Friday for a 7 p.m. match.
