SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Santa Barbara City College Women's Tennis team (14-2, 10-2) continued to roll on Tuesday at home, beating conference foe Canyons 7-2.
It was an important win in the Western State Conference (WSC) standings. The Vaqueros now sit alone in second place with a 10-2 record, while Canyons sits in third at 10-4—well ahead of fourth-place Ventura at 6-8. Undefeated LA Mission—the only team to beat the Vaqueros this year—leads the pack at 12-0.
Moreover, Tuesday's matchup was between two of the top teams in Southern California. The Vaqueros are currently ranked fourth in the ITA's SoCal Team rankings, with Canyons ranked seventh.
Santa Barbara got off to a strong start, winning all three doubles matches. Alice Guillaumond and reigning conference Athlete of the Month Iris Besmer won 8-2 on court one, as did McCarley Trigg and Luccia Noel-Jungclaussen on court two. Donatella Biscayart and Nicole O'Malley won 8-4 on court three to give the Vaqueros an early 3-0 advantage.
In singles, No. 2 Noel-Jungclaussen won every game on the way to a 6-0, 6-0 victory. No. 4 Biscayart (6-2, 6-0) and No. 6 O'Malley (6-1, 6-1) similarly dominated, clinching the hosts' team win. No. 5 Morea Naretto won the first set 6-0 before her opponent retired.
Even the two Canyons' points were tight. No. 1 Besmer dropped the first set 6-2 before resoundingly winning the second 6-0. Her opponent went on to win the third-set tiebreaker 10-7. No. 3 Trigg fell in two incredibly close sets, 7-5, 7-5.
Tuesday's match was the final home match of the season. The final regular season match is set for Thursday at Santa Monica, who the Vaqueros beat 9-0 last Thursday. Next week, the WSC Conference Tournament begins on Tuesday at Ventura College.
