Vaqueros Right Ship With 11-6 Win Over Mt. San Antonio
By Jimmy Friery
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Santa Barbara City College Baseball team snapped their losing streak on Tuesday, comfortably beating Mt. San Antonio 11-6 at Pershing Park.
The visitors scored a two-out run in the top of the first, but their lead was short-lived. In the Vaqueros' half of the second, Cole Ide led off with a double before scoring on Lucas Carlisle's single. Then, designated hitter Sean Asperger homered to flip the score to 3-1 Santa Barbara.
Mt. San Antonio scored another in the third, but the Vaqueros again punched back in the fourth. After Asperger doubled, Andrue Dosztan-Campbell homered with two outs to make it 5-2. A single, wild pitch, and RBI single from Damos Deworken added another run.
Santa Barbara kept scoring from there. Carlisle accounted for all three runs in the fifth via a two-run double and run scored on a first-and-third play—after he stole third. Ide's sac fly followed by Asperger's based-loaded walk plated two more in the sixth, increasing the lead to 10-2.
A four-run top of the seventh from Mt. San Antonio made the game competitive. With runners on second and third with one out, John Gurley came on in relief. A walk brought the tying run to the plate, but he struck out the next two batters to escape the jam and maintain the Vaqueros' lead.
Ranger Knudson tripled and then scored on a wild pitch in the next half-inning. That was all the scoring as the Vaqueros prevailed 11-6. Gurley recorded the final eight outs to earn the save, striking out four in 2.2 innings.
Asperger had three hits (two doubles and a homer) as did Deworken (three singles). Carlisle, Knudson, and William Matuszak—who also had three walks—each had two hits.
The Vaqueros have two more games this week, first at Citrus on Thursday. They will be back at Pershing Park on Saturday at 1 p.m. against LA Valley.
