CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The No. 2-ranked Santa Barbara City College women's water polo team had a busy weekend, earning second place at the SoCal Regionals and collecting Western State Conference honors.
On Friday, Luciana Grooms scored 4 goals to help the Vaqs to a 16-4 win over Saddleback College in the opening round of the regionals. Ava Barclay added 5 assists and 6 steals to go with her 17 saves in goal.
Sophie McGehee, Avery Jensen and May Guidoux all recorded hat tricks as SBCC claimed a 12-6 win over Orange Coast on Saturday. In addition to the 9 goals scored by the aforementioned trio, they also recorded 9 steals.
Saturday wrapped up with another close match with old foe Long Beach. Avery Jensen scored twice, and the Vaqs held a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Long Beach scored three times in the final frame and came away with the top spot in the SoCal Regional.
The Vaqueros qualified for the 3C2A Championship at Merced College and will open play on Thursday against San Joaquin Delta.
On Sunday, the WSC announced several honors for the water polo team on its Instagram.
Ava Barclay was named Player of the Year, and Chuckie Roth earned Coach of the Year.
Western State Conference first team honors went to Jada Ashen, Luciana Grooms, Avery Jensen and Sophie McGehee. Second team honors went to May Guidoux and Katie Strohl, while Pam Hernandez and Zoe McGehee earned honorable mention.
