RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Santa Barbara City College women's water polo team fought hard to claim victories against Riverside and Golden West on Saturday.
Jada Ashen tallied four goals in the 14-11 win over Riverside, while Sophia McGehee added three goals and an assist. Pamela Hernandez recorded three steals to go with her goal and two assists.
"We had a dominating weekend," said coach Chuckie Roth. "That was our largest margin of victory against Riverside at Riverside."
The Vaqueros jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the first quarter, but had to stand tough against a relentless Riverside attack.
"We had to overcome adversity," said Roth. "The first quarter went one way, and then we struggled in the second and third quarters before we found some good connections early in the fourth that ultimately secured the win."
Katie Strohl dished out seven assists to lead SBCC past Golden West, 12-7. Luciana Grooms and Avery Jensen each scored three goals, helping improve the Vaqs' record to 11-1 on the season.
The Vaqueros relied on their defense and stellar play in goal for each win.
"Both goalies, Ava and Riley, played well and commanded leadership," said Roth.
Santa Barbara hosts Ventura this evening at 6 p.m. at Santa Barbara High School.
