No. 7 Vaqs Stay Unbeaten, Best Canyons
GOLETA, Calif. – Stephanie Groswirt posted a triple-double to power the No. 7 Vaqueros past College of the Canyons, 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-13, 25-16), on Wednesday at Robertson Gymnasium.
Groswirt collected 14 kills, 20 assists, and 10 digs along with three aces. Bayley Padia added seven kills and seven digs while Kaylin Cooney chipped in 10 kills.
Dropping the second set of the match, 22-25, SBCC has its consecutive sets won streak come to an end at 20. However, the team remained nonplussed by the streak ending.
"I honestly wasn't concerned about it at all. I like being challenged because I know the games and the competition are only going to get more difficult and harder. The more we're tested and can bounce back, I think, the better it is for us long-term," said head coach Kat Niksto. "Credit to them in that second set, they served us off the court. But the fact that we didn't let it get to our heads and we were able to bounce back, and get back into what our game is, is the most important thing."
Morgan Guardado, playing against many former high school teammates, had 20 assists and a pair of aces, while Valeria Bellodas' strong service game added four aces along with 22 digs.
"[Bellodas] set our single-season aces record last year; she's on pace to give that another run," said Niksto. "She's a phenomenal server and is widening her repertoire of locations to serve aggressively. She's only going to get more difficult."
The Vaqueros take on Bakersfield today and return to Robertson Gymnasium on Wednesday to host Santa Monica at 6 p.m.
