10 Different Vaqueros Find Podium at WSC North Meet
By Jimmy Friery
VENTURA, Calif. – The Santa Barbara City College Track & Field team had a great showing at the Western State Conference (WSC) North meet on Friday, hosted by Ventura College. A whopping 10 different Vaqueros earned podium finishes in individual events. As a program, both men and women, the Vaqueros placed first in eight events.
The women have bragging rights over the men, earning five first-place finishes compared to the men's three. Sophomore San Marcos product Kiala Haas was involved in three of those, winning the 800m (2:23.14), 1500m (4:59.66), and the 4x400 relay (4:09.74) with Serenity Jones, Syriah Jones, and Audrey Kobayashi.
Syriah Jones won the 400m (1:01.85) while Serenity Jones was second in the 100m hurdles, just .18 from the top spot. Kobayashi was second in the discus (33.75 meters), but improved her mark from last week by 3.5 meters.
Outside of the members of that 4x400 relay team, multi-sport athlete Kaylee Lawson had a great day, too. She won the triple jump (11.15 meters) and was a close second in the javelin (21.80 meters). Marley Nacco also had some good results, most notably placing third in the 1500m (5:10.35).
Ethan Ball was the first winner for the men, topping the leaderboard of the 110m hurdles (16.20). RJ Robles later won the pole vault, surpassing 3.50 meters.
Beau Lantz ran a first-place 49.31 in the 400m and was a member of the third-place 4x400 relay team (3:33.13) with Ozzy Rogers, Callan Allende, and Beck O'Hara.
Alberto Arteaga was the men's fourth podium finisher, clocking at 1:02.92 in the 400m hurdles, good for second place.
The Vaqueros compete again next Friday and Saturday at the Dave Shannon Invite hosted by El Camino College.
