Haas Goes Two-For-Two at Moorpark Season Opener
By Jimmy Friery
MOORPARK, Calif. – The Santa Barbara City College Track & Field team competed at the Moorpark College Season Opener last weekend. Last year's 3C2A State finalist Kiala Haas ran two first-place times in the 600 Meters (1:41.05) and the 1500 Meters (5:07.25).
"I think she put the whole SoCal Region on notice with those performances," head coach Don Willis said of the San Marcos product.
"Today went really well for me and the majority of the team," Haas said. "Even though a lot of us are injured, we still powered through and made great progress. I am super excited for this season—I feel really strong and ready to race, and our team looks promising this year. I can't wait to see what's in store for the 2026 season."
While Haas's performance deserves plenty of praise, there were even more podium finishes on the Women's side. Serenity Jones came in third, just .19 off of first in the 150 Meters with a time of 19.80. Marley Nacco similarly finished third in the 3000 Meters at 11:24.72, a race which had 23 total competitors.
Sprinter Audrey Kobayashi placed fifth in the 150 Meters (20.12) and seventh in the 60 Meters (8.32), too.
"I couldn't be more proud of both the Women and Men with their performances this weekend," Willis added.
The Men were led by freshman Colin Lorentz, a Newbury Park graduate, competing in his first ever Decathlon competition. He placed sixth (4293 points) and is hopeful to make the SoCal Regional Meet—and ultimately, the 2026 3C2A State Meet.
"Competing in my first Dec was a really unique experience," Lorentz said. "It was much more of a mental test than a physical one. Going from event to event without getting time to process what had just happened was difficult, especially when I scratched in pole vault. Overall, I felt like this was great for my development, and I'm really excited to keep learning and eventually attempt to beat my score."
Ozzy Rodgers had the best finish for the Vaqueros in the non-multis, clocking in at 17.12 in the 150 Meters for 20th of 47.
"All in all, it was a great way to kick off the 2026 Spring season," Willis concluded. "We are looking forward to competing this upcoming weekend at Westmont."
Santa Barbara competes again this weekend at four-year neighbor Westmont College's Warrior Relays.
