OJAI, Calif. – The Santa Barbara City College Women's Tennis team had a strong showing at The 124th Ojai Tennis Tournament this past weekend. Doubling as the 3C2A Championships, Alice Guillaumond and Luccia Noel-Jungclaussen both reached the Singles Quarterfinals.
The two Vaqueros and Iris Besmer all qualified for the tournament, earning first round byes. All three advanced to the Round of 32 with straight-set victories.
Guillaumond followed that up with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Josilyn Rivera, a member of the state champion LA Mission team. Then, another 6-3, 6-1 win over Glendale's Sklyer Sabetta brought her to the Quarterfinals, where the Vaquero fell 6-2, 6-2.
Noel-Jungclaasen had a similar path. After a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory, she won a close 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 Round of 16 match. In the Quarters, she was on the unlucky end of a 7-5, 6-4 match against Mission's Amy Nghiem.
In doubles, Guillaumond and Besmer teamed up, as did Noel-Jungclaussen and McCarley Trigg. After first round byes, both pairs cruised through the Round of 64 and Round of 32 with the closest set being 6-2.
In the Round of 16, the two teams each had close but unfortunate results. Guillaumond/Besmer won their first set 6-3 before falling 7-5, forcing a superbreaker. They would lose 10-3 to end their solid run.
Noel-Jungclaussen/Trigg lost their first set 6-4, but dominated a 6-1 second set. They, too, would drop the ensuing superbreaker, 10-5.
The Vaqueros ended their strong Dual season with just three losses. The singles individuals and doubles teams competing in Ventura County also ended their seasons respectably at one of the oldest athletics tournaments in the country.
