Moharram is new men's and women's tennis coach

Randy Moharram has been selected as head coach of the SBCC men's and women's tennis teams.

"Randy is an excellent coach," said athletic director Ryan Byrne. "When you have a great coach, you can really plug them into almost any sport and have success. Randy is that type of coach. He is very passionate about student-success, he has a deep understanding of our mission and vision and he is absolutely tremendous with people.

"He has just immersed himself into tennis. I think he has been to every local tournament and already met with just about every key tennis stakeholder in town. He is going to work really well with some talented assistants as well as recruit the right students to have the student retention and big-picture success that we are seeking."

Moharram played football, basketball and baseball at San Marcos High, receiving All-Channel League honors in football and basketball. He graduated in 1999 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from San Francisco State and a Master's in Kinesiology from Cal State Northridge.

He was an assistant basketball coach at Lowell High in San Francisco and at San Marcos High. He spent six years (2008-14) as an assistant for the SBCC men's basketball team.

"I am privileged to be a part of such a thriving athletics program and work alongside exceptional coaches and support staff," said Moharram. "The goal for both teams is to compete at a high level on the court and in the classroom. To prepare our student-athletes for the next level of competition as an athlete as well as assist them in achieving their academic goals."

Michael Mickelson, a USPTA tennis pro who's taught for the City of Santa Barbara and in Florida, will be the assistant coach for the Vaquero men. Christina Klein, a former star on Westmont College's nationally ranked teams in 2006-07 and a tennis and fitness instructor, will be the women's assistant coach.

"I'm really excited and fortunate to have Michael & Christina as part of the program," said Moharram. "Their teaching experience coupled with their collegiate playing experience provide for significant added value to the program. Michael brings a lot of passion and enthusiasm for teaching tennis and will successfully connect with our student-athletes to help them progress. Christina possesses the technical and tactical knowledge of tennis but more importantly has a great understanding of training the athlete as a whole."

Lance Kronberg, who coached Vaquero men's tennis in 2013 and the women in 2014-15, announced he is stepping down as women's coach for personal reasons. Kronberg led the women to second place in the WSC in 2015 and their first Southern Cal Regional appearance in three years.

 Moharram teaches in the SBCC Health & Education department. His current classes are Personal Health Awareness, Strength Training (Life Fitness Center), Beach Volleyball and Hiking for Fitness.

Moharram and his wife Matti have a 1-year-old daughter.
