Usual Suspects Top Podium at Non-Conference Cuesta Invite
By Jimmy Friery
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Santa Barbara City College Women's Swimming team placed third at the Cuesta Super Invite last week, scoring 615.5 points. A Thursday through Saturday meet, the Vaqueros only competed the first two days; they were in first place at the end of day two.
"Thursday was a sprint meet and Friday was day one of the invitational," head coach Chuckie Roth said. "Leah was Queen of the Pool, swimming the fastest 50 Free."
Leah Rummelhoff twice won the 50 Free, first with a 25.11 time. Then, in a swim-off with Mt. San Antonio's Spencer Damaske, the Vaquero won again with a blistering 24.35. She also anchored the team's first-place finishes in the 200 Medley Relay and 200 Free Relay.
Roth shouted out May Guidoux's "grit and resilience" this year so far. She also was a member of the 200 Medley Relay team and won two individual races—the 50 Breast, twice. Her first time of 31.72 was well clear of second place, and she improved that to 31.68 in the second race. That .04 was necessary, too, as Cypress' Jasmine Liu clocked in at 31.69—a miniscule .01 separating the two swimmers.
Trinity Link rounded out the three Vaqueros who won both relay and individual races. On both the 200 Medley and 200 Free teams, she also won the top spot in the 50 Fly (26.86).
Max Kerr also deserves mention for her performance in the mile. She shaved 29.85 from her previous time, clocking in at 20:57.82.
The competition gets serious again for the Vaqueros as they prepare for WSC #2 hosted by Los Angeles Valley College on Saturday.
