Vaqs Rally to Claim Fourth in Day 2 of SoCal Championships; Punch Ticket to State Tourney

VENTURA, Calif. – The Santa Barbara City College women's golf team cut 25 strokes from their first round scores on Monday at Olivas Links to earn a fourth-place finish at the SoCal Championships.

"Our golfers really all showed up and turned the corner this weekend," said head coach Devin Engebretsen. "I just want to give a huge credit to all four of them for sticking with the belief in the program and the hard work that they put in throughout the entire year, where they saw the fruits of their labor."

Aidie Smith improved by four strokes to earn a 76 and claim the fifth overall spot in the tournament.

Camryn Chapman stayed consistent. After shooting a 77 on Sunday, she shot an 83 on Monday to help the Vaqueros keep pace with the field. 

"[Chapman] has been putting a lot of work in with just her swing or swing plane and trying to get it right in the right pocket," said Engebretsen. "She came out and for two days was like lights out putting, so she went 77/83, so for her to shoot those two rounds was incredible."

Mylee Gonzalez improved from 103 on Sunday to an 86 on Monday, shaving 17 strokes off her score. 

"She came out and shot 40 on the front nine on Monday and then followed up with a 43 on the back nine for an 83," said Engebretsen on Gonzalez's performance. "She hadn't broken 90 all year, and for her to do that on the final day, it was outstanding."

Azul Calzadillas continued the trend of improving on Monday, shooting a 92 and removing 10 strokes from Sunday's performance.

With their performance at the tournament, the Vaqueros will head to the 3C2A Women's Golf Championship.

"A really great job for our team and for our golfers, and we're excited to get to the state this Sunday and Monday at Alisal River Golf Course in Solvang," said Engebretsen.
