Fahy no-hits Vaqueros in WSC North opener, 7-0

Kylee Fahy tossed a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts on Thursday, sparking Bakersfield to a 7-0 shutout of SBCC in a WSC North softball opener at Pershing Park.

Fahy, a hard-throwing sophomore right-hander, led the state in strikeouts last year and is No. 1 this season with 48 Ks in 41.2 innings. The defending WSC North champion Renegades evened their record at 4-4 and the Vaqueros fell to 2-7.

"That was the fastest pitcher we've seen and I think she'll be the fastest we'll see all year," said second-year coach Justine Bosio. "She's has a lot of pop, she probably throws in the 64- or 65-mph range.

"Bakersfield will probably win the conference again. Anytime you have an ace in the circle, you're pretty set for the year."

The Renegades took a 2-0 lead in the first against SBCC starter Paige Powell. Alexis Lopez singled to lead off the game, went to second on a groundout and scored when Hannah Weaver couldn't handle a throw at first base. Two batters later, Fahy drove in Alantis Rede with a single through the right side.

Fahy was 2-4 with two RBIs. Fahy led off the fourth with a single to right and shortstop Alex Venegas belted a two-run homer to straightaway center, boosting the lead to 4-0. Bakersfield added single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh with the leadoff hitter scoring each time.

The Vaqueros will play two on Saturday at Fullerton, taking on Long Beach at 1 p.m. and Fullerton at 3 p.m.
