Vaqueros Win at WSC Championships
By Jimmy Friery
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Santa Barbara City College Men's Golf team won the WSC Championships rounds—officially WSC #9 and #10—on Monday at Sundale Country Club.
The Vaqueros' 566 allowed them to finish two strokes better than Canyons' 568. Santa Barbara shot an incredible 281 in round one before a 285 in the second round.
The Vaqueros are peaking at the right time. Canyons had won the first seven rounds of WSC play—in five of those, the Vaqueros finished second. But Santa Barbara won last week at WSC #8 in Ojai, and then again at today's 36-hole Championships—essentially the conference tournament.
No golfer was better than Reynaldo Rodriguez across the two rounds in Bakersfield. After a first-round 71, he was even better in the second, shooting a 68 to help the Vaqueros fend off Canyons. Two of Canyons' golfers had identical scores.
Hugo de Mollerat du Jeu finished one stroke behind them. Shooting a 69 in round one, he hit a 71 in round two. Another stroke below him was Mason Gredvig, who also logged a first-round 69 before a second-round 72.
Aidan Watts had the fourth-best score on the team in both rounds. He shot a 72 and 74, not far behind the top three in either round.
Even Wyatt Taylor, who shot a first-round 75, would have made the scoresheet on six of the seven other teams. Brayden Mlodzik's 158 total was sixth on the team, but similarly would have been better than six of the seven other teams' highest score.
The Vaqueros now look ahead to the 36-hole SoCal Regionals at Olivas Links in Ventura on Monday.
