Hutchins’ free throws lift Vaqueros over Hancock, 60-59

Hutchins, a 6-foot sophomore guard from Bismarck, N.D., led all scorers with 20 points and also had four assists and three steals. The Vaqueros (3-16, 1-2) snapped a 13-game losing streak and posted their first win since Nov. 19 when they knocked off Hancock 99-92.
Tyler Crandall tied his season high with 16 points, all in the first half, and grabbed eight rebounds. Drayten Howell, a freshman point guard from Lompoc High, added 11 points and five assists.
Marcellus Garrick topped Hancock (10-13, 0-3) with 15 points.
Crandall scored the last six points of the first half, giving the Vaqueros a 39-33 lead.
The Bulldogs outshot the Vaqueros 45.1 to 40.7 percent and dominated the boards, 40-22. Hancock had twice as many turnovers (26-13), leading to 30 Vaquero points.
The Vaqueros went on a 10-2 run and took a 56-48 lead on a 3-pointer by Hutchins with 3:52 to play. Hutchins hit 7-16 field goals and 3-7 from long range.
The Bulldogs stormed back with an 8-0 run and tied the game at 56 on a triple by Garrick at the 1:44 mark. Hancock took its first lead since the opening minute, 59-58, on a layup by Kevawn Lord with 22 seconds left that capped an 11-2 burst.
The Vaqueros will host Moorpark on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
