The 2014 schedule has been announced for SBCC football and the Vaqueros will host San Bernardino Valley in the season opener on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 4 p.m.
San Bernardino went 8-3 last year and lost to Southwestern 34-23 in the Patriotic Bowl.
After opening vs. county rival Hancock the last six years, the Vaqueros will meet the Bulldogs in Week 2 at Santa Maria. The other nonconference game is Sept. 20 at East Los Angeles.
"San Bernardino is a very talented team and it will be a heckuva first game," said eighth-year head coach Craig Moropoulos. "We have to play at Hancock for the second straight year (due to the new two-year schedule cycle) and I'm sure they'll be very fired up after losing to us last year."
Santa Barbara enjoyed its best season in 22 years in 2013 with a 7-3 record that started with six straight wins.
The Vaqueros will open American Pacific Conference play on Sept. 27 with a home game vs. West L.A. In the last few years, the Vaqueros have played the Wildcats in the conference finale. SBCC won last year's meeting 49-38.
"Things are going well (in spring practice) and we're excited about some of the guys we've got out there," said Moropoulos. "The next phase will be June, where we'll have another influx of recruits coming in. We're excited about the possibility of a nice upgrade."
