Kelee Shimizu won the consolation race of the 500 freestyle and broke a school record on Thursday, the first day of the State Women's Swimming & Diving Championships at De Anza College in Cupertino.

The three-day event is being held at a Northern California location for the first time in 11 years. It's the first outdoor venue for the Community College Championships in seven seasons.

Shimizu finished ninth in a time of 5:11.87, shaving nearly three seconds off Tina Hill's 2016 mark of 5:14.48.

The 400 medley relay team took sixth and set another school record of 4:04.85. Kendra Carr was 11th in the 50 free (24.97).

Orange Coast won three events and took the first-day lead with 173 points. Santa Rosa is second at 132.5. The Vaqueros, who've finished fourth in the state the last two years, are 10th with 47 points.
